Inspired by our new junior collection of Homewares, Furniture and Bedding, we chatted to Sue Kropp (our fabulous Homewares Product Development Manager) about styling the vintage trend, and the dos and don’ts when decorating kids’ bedrooms.

What’s the simplest way to create a vintage look in a child’s bedroom?

Vintage bedlinen, chandeliers, wallpaper and homewares are always the easiest way to introduce fashion into a bedroom.  Manchester would be the best starting point for achieving this look.  A design such as our Shannon Fricke’s ‘Flowers in the Field’ quilt cover is perfect for a girl’s room.  The ‘Ashton’ quilt cover set in blue or taupe provides a great starting point in a boy’s room. The wonderful thing about vintage styling is that it’s very mix-and-match - this makes it an easy trend in which to incorporate existing pieces.

What are the dreaded don’ts when decorating a kids room?

DON’T use wall colours that will date quickly. Often, it is best to use a neutral pallet and introduce key colours with homewares pieces such as prints and cushions.  Having a neutral base gives you the ability to do anything.

DON’T be too age specific. Try and keep the room age-appropriate but not so specific that it needs to be redone every 12 months..

From a practical point of view – what are the essentials for junior’s room?

Lots of storage space! Kids have lots of toys and books – make sure there’s ample room to keep them tidy. Beds with built-in storage underneath are ideal for small bedrooms.

Pinboards are great as they allow kids to showcase their favourite works of art - without destroying the walls!

A quality mattress, pillow and quilt are essential for growing bodies. Plus a good night’s sleep for junior means a good night’s sleep for Mum and Dad, too!

The creative mastermind behind our funky Kids Winter Launch catalogue, super stylist Matt Page reveals his favourite pieces from Domayne’s new kids’ range.

Of all the amazing spreads in our kids’ catalogue, which is your favourite and how did you create this scene?
Hands down, my favourite shot was of the ‘Amore’ Single Bed (as pictured below). I really liked the magical/mystical night garden theme we created for this one. In order to produce this kind of set, we initially sketch out our ideas and build a set or have set elements created to fulfill the brief. In this case, we sourced an old crab apple tree and recycled a rustic fence from an orchard.

Homewares are a big focus here at Domayne this season. What do you see as the stand-out trends?
Loads of metallics in lamps, textiles and icon pieces – such as the gold ‘Will’ Robot. Keep in mind that a little bit of bling goes a long way, and practice restraint when adding metallic pieces to any space.

Suspending reality for a moment, Matt…if your 8-year-old self could pick five Domayne pieces to create the ultimate boy’s bedroom which pieces would you choose?
That’s a tough one! I would have to choose the ‘Antler’ Wall Decor, ‘Springfield’ Pendant, ‘Bonne Nuit’ Moustache Cushion (all shown below), ‘Will’ Robot and ‘Charlie’ Bed (pictured above)- because every kid needs loads of storage in their bedroom!

There are some gorgeous junior models featured in the catalogue! What were the kids like on set?
They were all great to work with. Kids generally have about a 30-minute attention span so we generally give them a break for a bit after they become comfortable with working in the environment. On one of the days we had a child who was very shy but after meeting our rather loud and humorous photographer we thought we had a parrot on the set. Needless to say we were happy the minute we had ‘the’ shot and it was time to get the talent away.

When it comes to styling a kid’s bedroom what are some important points to consider?
Storage, storage and more storage – you can never have enough. Oh, and as tempting as it may be, don’t go crazy with bright colours. Kids need a space to be calm.

The creative mastermind behind our funky Kids Winter Launch catalogue, super stylist Matt Page reveals his favourite pieces from Domayne’s new kids’ range.

Of all the amazing spreads in our kids’ catalogue, which is your favourite and how did you create this scene?
Hands down, my favourite shot was of the ‘Amore’ Single Bed (as pictured below). I really liked the magical/mystical night garden theme we created for this one. In order to produce this kind of set, we initially sketch out our ideas and build a set or have set elements created to fulfill the brief. In this case, we sourced an old crab apple tree and recycled a rustic fence from an orchard.

Homewares are a big focus here at Domayne this season. What do you see as the stand-out trends?
Loads of metallics in lamps, textiles and icon pieces – such as the gold ‘Will’ Robot. Keep in mind that a little bit of bling goes a long way, and practice restraint when adding metallic pieces to any space.

Suspending reality for a moment, Matt…if your 8-year-old self could pick five Domayne pieces to create the ultimate boy’s bedroom which pieces would you choose?
That’s a tough one! I would have to choose the ‘Antler’ Wall Decor, ‘Springfield’ Pendant, ‘Bonne Nuit’ Moustache Cushion (all shown below), ‘Will’ Robot and ‘Charlie’ Bed (pictured above)- because every kid needs loads of storage in their bedroom!

There are some gorgeous junior models featured in the catalogue! What were the kids like on set?
They were all great to work with. Kids generally have about a 30-minute attention span so we generally give them a break for a bit after they become comfortable with working in the environment. On one of the days we had a child who was very shy but after meeting our rather loud and humorous photographer we thought we had a parrot on the set. Needless to say we were happy the minute we had ‘the’ shot and it was time to get the talent away.

When it comes to styling a kid’s bedroom what are some important points to consider?
Storage, storage and more storage – you can never have enough. Oh, and as tempting as it may be, don’t go crazy with bright colours. Kids need a space to be calm.
